Physics has so much potential

Physics has so much potential

I have known what potential energy is for a very long time, but it is only of late I think I have truly began to appreciate its subtly in describing the world around us. Anyone that took A-level physics in the UK (and I presume other countries around the world) will have come up against the “classic” potential energy formulas; the main one of which I speak being PE = mgh used to describe the gravitational potential energy with m representing mass, g the gravitational constant (9.8 on Earth) and h representing the height of the object above the ground. It’s a neat little nugget of information and it helps to rationalise the changes in energy types when say an object falls from rest towards the earth – ignoring other forces etc, we model this as gravitational potential energy being converted to kinetic energy (½mv²) and all go…

Pure breathtaking mathematical beauty

Pure breathtaking mathematical beauty

Joe's avatarRationalising The Universe

My personal silence is broken; I must apologise for the low level of activity on my part I have been very busy finishing up the first year of my second degree – this is now behind me and I am on to the second year of my second degree! That is not easy to read.

You may have noticed that I now have a co-author Mekhi; who I reblogged some posts from previously. I am very excited to now be part of a team (if not a little intimidated by the quality of the team-member!); hopefully in the coming months you will be getting more regularity from Rationalising the Universe. After all, if something isn’t worth doing habitually it isn’t worth doing at all.

Today I write a short post about something close to my own heart; and to so many others in the field of mathematics which is the…

gravitational waves, Mohsen Behnam

The subject of February’s short post of the month is gravitational waves. These were predicted by Albert Einstein back in 1916, and after decades of searching have finally been detected. In an announcement made on 11 February at a Washington DC press conference David Reitze, the executive director of the LIGO Laboratory, said: “Ladies and gentlemen, we have […]

Big Science

Nice!

“Big Science”

After providing a deep technical discussion of an important paper last time, I thought a complete change of pace might be welcome.  I’m going to talk about “big science” and why it is good science.  The standard thought about science today is that small-scale researcher-driven (i.e., curiosity-driven) science is “good science” and “big science” is bad science.  I am going to spend some time explaining why I think this is wrong on several accounts.

First, let’s define big science with some examples.  The archetype of big science is the Manhattan project, which if you aren’t aware is the effort by the United States (and Great Britain) to develop the atomic bomb during World War II. This effort transformed into an effort to maintain scientific supremecy during the Cold War and included the development of the hydrogen bomb.   Many premier institutions were built upon these efforts along with innumerable…

Too Big to Fail

Nice!

Bill Rider's avatarThe Regularized Singularity

This week I’m in Las Vegas an appropriately ironic place to see people making stupid gambles on the future. We are having the annual “Principal Investigator’s” meeting for the NNSA’s ASC program, itself a rather ironic name for an echo chamber, which is a Cosmopolitan-Las-Vegas-008more apt description. There is frightfully little investigation or intellectual engagement
in sight, it is more of a programmatic, project meeting with little or no discussion of intellectual depth, at least publicly
. Private discussions among the technically oriented attendees are a bit more far reaching, but everyone seems to feel a deep sense of following a fate rather than making choices. The lack of holistic thought and vitality in high performance computing is becoming evident, but the machine focus is a juggernaut too powerful to slow down at this point.

If failure is not an option, then neither is success.

Tears Of Joy

Tears Of Joy

Perfect!

jademaree88's avatarThe Journey to Freedom

Have you ever been so overcome by emotion that you just burst into tears?

I’m not talking tears of sadness (if you’ve read any of my earlier posts you’ll know I cried a lot of those last year).

No, I’m talking tears of pure joy.

Well if you haven’t, then I can guarantee you haven’t realised your true calling in life yet. That’s not a bad thing, but the sooner you find it, the greater your life will become. A little while ago I wrote about ‘finding your why’ and how you should reach a point of strong emotion once you realise what your why is.

Well that’s the sort of feeling I had again yesterday.

I was going about my normal day, driving to work, when I happened to glance at my phone (oooh naughty – I know). When I looked at my phone I saw a number of new messages…

It’s All In The Mind

It’s All In The Mind

jademaree88's avatarThe Journey to Freedom

Often people who get involved with network and affiliate marketing will get discouraged. For a lot of people this happens in the first few weeks, before they’ve even really given themselves a chance to succeed.

Because of the way they’re feeling, they will actually look for reasons to talk themselves out of continuing. This is a definite path to failing.

They might hear someone talk badly about the company they’ve joined.  That puts a little nugget of doubt in their minds so they start researching ‘is …. a scam?’ and because it’s the internet there will most likely be media about it so they begin to feed their doubts and second guess their involvement in the industry. I know because I’ve been there – think Isagenix & Herbalife.

The truth is, those companies just weren’t for me because I didn’t believe in the products. I’ve seen many people (even close friends) get great…

How To Keep Your Business & Personal Lives Separate

How To Keep Your Business & Personal Lives Separate

jademaree88's avatarThe Journey to Freedom

When you start an online business there’s two ways you could approach it.

  1. Hassle all your friends and family and spam like there’s no tomorrow until someone finally buys from you.
  2. Look for traffic sources outside your personal network, build new and genuine relationships with people who actually have the same interests as you, and your product will sell itself.

Personally, I prefer option 2.

When I first started my business I had the added worry of not letting any of my work colleagues know what I was doing. I also didn’t really want my friends and family knowing what I was up to because I didn’t want anyone trying to talk me out of it.

For that reason I needed to find ways to build my business without utilising my existing social media pages.

So what did I do?

First – I started up a Facebook page. This is actually…
